1. Background
The only child of a single mother who worked as an aerospace engineer for the Osean Defense Forces. His father died in an experimental aircraft test accident in 2002, when Marsh was four; he has no clear memory of him. With his mother often away, he was raised mostly by his paternal grandmother, a former aviation mechanic who taught him music and machines. He entered the North Osea Aviation Academy in 2016 and graduated in 2019 as the Lighthouse War ended, with mediocre theory marks and exceptional practical scores.
2. Psychology
Dominant trait: deflection through humor, deployed as a shield against processing loss. He is a hidden perfectionist who trains about three hours a day in simulation while insisting he does not care. He is consistently the first in the unit to notice when someone else is unwell. His recurring fear is dying in a cockpit the way his father did.
Formative event. In 2010, at twelve, he was beside his grandmother when she had a stroke while they worked on a vintage engine. Emergency lines in Oured were jammed at the height of the Circum-Pacific War, and he did not know what to do. She survived with partial paralysis. He decided that if he had been more serious and more prepared, she would have recovered fully.
Resulting bias: deep investment in an outcome guarantees failure when it matters, so lightness is safer than truth. The bias works: it keeps morale high. It also keeps anyone from knowing him. He is widely loved and not, in any real sense, known.
Operational prognosis. Stable in conventional combat; fragile under sustained psychological pressure. The likely break is a mission where his evasion produces an error that nearly kills his wingman and forces him to see that his lightness carries weight. Against MINOZIS, moderate to elevated risk: a system that broadcasts a dead man's voice is calibrated to break a pilot whose architecture is built to avoid feeling the stakes.
3. Voice
Clipped, self-interrupting, layered with slang and obscure references. He laughs at his own joke before he finishes it. Under real stress the jokes stop mid-sentence, and that is the tell the others listen for.
4. Anchor
A beaded necklace he made at twelve, the last thing he made beside his grandmother before her stroke. He wears it on every flight. His cockpit sound system reads as a joke and works as emotional regulation; one die from the insignia hangs on it as a charm.
5. Aircraft and Playstyle
He has declined a stealth transition twice. The Super Hornet is the deck's rugged, forgiving workhorse, an aircraft that absorbs abuse and improvisation and brings its pilot home. He flies it the way he presents himself, as something unserious and disposable, and inside that presentation is a man who has memorized every limit of the airframe and flies closer to them, more precisely, than any stealth pilot would dare.
| Gameplay element | Marsh |
|---|---|
| POV mechanic | Edge: a precision gun-pass assist that shows the exact window for close, discriminating attacks (used in GLASS FERRY) |
| Squadron command | "Double or Nothing" call: commits the whole flight to an all-in attack; cannot be recalled |
| Pressure profile | Load rises when someone asks him for help he cannot give; at high Load his radio calls become jokes that carry no information |
| Relief | Asano's private channel; Eirhei's Translate |
6. Arc
| Mission | Beat |
|---|---|
| M01 Four of a Kind | Pulls Thorne off a missile. Proposes dice for the insignia that night. |
| M02 Glass Ferry | Sees what protocol cannot and calls "Double or Nothing." |
| 2028 (backstory) | Hears Asano singing on an open channel and, for once, does not make a joke. |
| M06 Harbor | Escorts the transport carrying Katya and Irina. A frightened voice in the transport asks him for help he cannot give in time. His joke stops mid-sentence and does not resume. He gets the transport home. |
| M09 Anchor in the Storm | Flies the low block that keeps the aircraft from diving for the ice. Says nothing funny for the entire mission. |
| Final circle | Does not joke. Talks about his grandmother. |
