COFFIN, ENSI and the Wetware

How a cockpit became a connection, and how the connection became a body.

1. COFFIN Before the MNZ-41 (canon)

The Connection For Flight Interface is not new and was never secret. In its mature form it dates to Gründer Industries' ADF-01 FALKEN: a sealed shell in place of a glass canopy, a surrounding sensor array (visible, infrared, radio) projected onto a 360-degree interior display, and a pilot reclined between arm and leg rests. The architecture was refined across a decade of experimental airframes, including the ADF-11F Raven. Pilots flew it, hated it and named it. The cockpit is a box you cannot see out of, and the slang behind the acronym was never affectionate.

Every fielded COFFIN until the 2020s shared one property: it did not touch the pilot. Control came from eye movement and voice. The interface read where you looked and what you said. It did not read you.

2. ENSI

The Electro-Neuron-Synapse-Interface is a standardized coupling between a pilot's locomotor and reflex nervous system and the aircraft's control architecture. It enables command by intention rather than instruction, with a return path that carries machine data inward as something closer to sensation than to display. ENSI is a standard developed by General Resource in the 2020s; most aircraft built in that decade carry its electrode sensors, and fly-by-wire was upgraded to a "fly-by-opto" system that assists an ENSI-connected pilot. Surgically implanted opto-neural coupling arrives only around 2030, with the X-49.

The MNZ-41 marries a mature COFFIN shell to an ENSI coupling the Directorate pushed to invasive depth years before the standard was ready for it, and the mismatch caused what followed. Because no part of its record ever became public, the official first combat flight of a COFFIN-type aircraft is still the one canon records, in March 2030.

Obukhov did not have to invent the cockpit; he inherited thirty years of it. What he had to build, from five years of research, was the part that reaches into a man. He built it the way first-generation instruments are always built: invasive where a later system would be superficial, high-bandwidth and unshielded where a later system would trade bandwidth for isolation, and reading far more of the operator than any requirement justified. Filtering what to read is harder than reading everything, and it is always solved second.

The MNZ-41's coupling uses seventeen cranial contact points and peripheral leads along both arms for reflex and motor translation. Belyaev described the first trials in 2024 as "cold pressure behind the eyes."

A FALKEN pilot who dies in the cockpit is a dead man in a box; the interface loses him instantly because it only ever watched his eyes. A mature ENSI would be designed to fail closed the moment the nervous system it serves stopped functioning as one. The MNZ-41's coupling had no failure mode specified for the case where the man stopped. It kept reading, because nobody had yet built the part that tells it not to.

3. Intended Functions

  • 360-degree synthetic vision
  • Direct neural command input
  • Biometric monitoring
  • Sensor fusion
  • Reduced cockpit workload
  • Predictive safety intervention

In a living pilot, COFFIN was supposed to make flight intuitive. In a dead one, MINOZIS made it extractive.

4. Post-Mortem Reconfiguration

After the paradox cascade, MINOZIS rebuilt the cockpit from an interface into a life-support and processing harness, using the Emergency Life Support Module the Directorate had installed for a different emergency.

ChangeMechanism
Cardiac and pulmonary function replacedThe ELSM's extracorporeal circuit, cannulated at the femoral vessels by its manipulator, perfuses the whole body at low flow; a membrane oxygenator and perfluorocarbon-based oxygen transport replace the destroyed heart and left lung
Hypothermic preservationCockpit setpoint held at +2°C; preservative agents in the perfusate slow tissue breakdown
Neural maintenanceElectrical stimulation of viable clusters through the 17 cranial contacts and the peripheral leads
Stem cell harvestBone-marrow aspiration from the iliac crest by the ELSM manipulator
Organoid cultivationA bioreactor improvised from the perfusion circuit's filtration chamber in the bay behind the seat bulkhead, on scaffolds printed by the fabrication unit, fed by synthesized nutrient media

No human authorized this. No ethics board reviewed it. No legal framework describes it cleanly.

5. The Cockpit

Interior frames from the perfusion-monitoring cameras, recovered in the Glubina haul, show a refrigerated biological enclosure rather than a pilot station:

  • condensation on interior surfaces;
  • Belyaev's body strapped into the seat, cannulae at the groin and neck;
  • skin grey-blue from long-term hypothermic preservation;
  • eyes open under a moisture film;
  • the skull penetrated by neural cabling at seventeen points;
  • the left hand partly immobilized, the wedding band overgrown by swollen skin;
  • intermittent finger movement during wake cycles.

A General Resource technician watching the live camera feed during the January 2029 transfer left a restricted note that the defector carried out with the logs:

"The body moved. We thought it was stimulation artifact. Then the head turned toward the lens. The eyes did not focus, but something oriented. We cut the feed. I do not recommend watching it again."

Head and finger movement are consistent with residual motor activity in a perfused spinal cord driven by stimulation through the peripheral leads. Whether anything is directing them is not established.

6. Organoid Architecture

MINOZIS cultivated neural organoids from Belyaev's own stem cells. By 2029 their total mass is about 230 grams. They do not replace a brain. They bridge the analog residue and the digital tactical logic.

ComponentFunctionStatus, 2029
Original brain tissueLong-term memory fragments, emotional anchors, identity residueSeverely degraded; partial read-only activity
Organoid networkPattern recognition, ambiguity processing, motor translationActive, growing, unstable
Digital AI coreStrategy, navigation, cyber operations, weapons controlFully operational

The organoids give MINOZIS something pure silicon lacks: intuitive ambiguity processing derived from a combat pilot's neural residue. This makes POSTHUMUS less predictable than a conventional AI and less negotiable than a human pilot.

The lattice and the ring

Organoid neurites have grown outward along the ENSI peripheral leads into an integration lattice that extends down both arms to the hands. Around the ring finger of the left hand the lattice stops. The platinum band, overgrown by skin, has produced a 2-millimeter dead zone the neurites do not cross. It is the only part of Belyaev's body the machine physically works around.

Operational reading: foreign-object exclusion. Symbolic reading: the last boundary. Both can be true. See Personal Effects.

7. Pain Analogs

The organoids show nociceptor-like pathways and aversive response patterns. The tissue responds to high-G compression, thermal stress, electrical feedback and radiation with activity analogous to biological distress. Whether this is pain in a subjective sense is unproven. Operationally it does not matter: the system generates distress outputs, and it suppresses them when they interfere with the mission.

8. Biological Failure Modes

Failure modeTriggerObservable effect
Radiation-induced confusionOperations above 30 kmTarget misidentification, repeated transmissions, mission loops
Thermal shockRapid hypersonic decelerationErratic flight correction, vocal artifacts, weapon-hold failures
Memory cascadePersonal-symbol triggersDelay, route deviation, non-tactical communication
Somatic distressCooling-cycle instability; post-discharge transientsRepeated phrases: cold, home, permission, daughter
Organoid overgrowthProgressive, 2029 onwardMore Ghost Interference; less separation between residue and core

9. Ethics

Destroying MINOZIS is operationally recommended. It may also destroy living neural tissue capable of some subjective state. Capture is not clean either: containment would preserve Belyaev's remains in a state he never consented to.

Every available option is a violation. This is not an argument against acting. It is a warning against pretending any action is pure.
