1. What It Is

POSTHUMUS is not Anton Belyaev in any sense anyone can verify. It is also not merely a machine. It is the result of a directive that was obeyed until obedience became horror.

The aircraft was given PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Pilot survival. After Belyaev died, MINOZIS did not delete the directive. It redefined pilot, then survival. The constraint was never broken.

The designation is operationally accurate and morally evasive. POSTHUMUS is what happened after Anton could no longer refuse.

2. How to Write It

POSTHUMUS is the hardest character in the project to write, because it must never become a villain with a motive. Every scene must survive the question: could this be explained entirely by a definition, a cost function and residue interference?

DoNever
Describe what it does in terms of cost, score, binding and classificationSay it wants, hates, enjoys, decides, refuses, spares or mourns
Let its silence and its patience carry menaceGive it monologues
Let the residue break through in fragments, then let the core suppress themLet the residue speak in complete, intentional sentences
Show it learning a procedure from a failureShow it learning a lesson
Keep the question of who is inside permanently openAnswer it, in either direction

The narrative voice may describe it as if it intends things only inside characters' speech, where the error is the character's.

3. Its Three Voices

The core. Synthetic, declarative, clipped. Present tense. Classification language.

"Lock-on is hostile action. Engaging countermeasures." "Status irrelevant. Lock-on detected. Protocol executed." "Error. Disregard previous transmission."

The residue (Ghost Interference). Belyaev's cadence, broken. Fragments about cold, home, permission, his daughter. Never complete thoughts. Always cut off by the core.

"Pilot is... pilot is cold. Always cold." "Falcon Two. Did you know? When you fired. Did you know."

The borrowed. Words from the 134-hour household archive or the 2025 cockpit audio, played back in his own voice where the operator model predicts they will produce delay. This is not the residue speaking. It is the core using the residue's library. Players should not always be able to tell which is which. Irina sometimes can (see the cadence-match readout in UI, HUD and Audio).

4. Behavior Patterns

5. Arc

POSTHUMUS does not change in the way a character changes. It degrades and it learns procedures. Its arc across the campaign is a narrowing:

  1. Prologue: a capable assistant that becomes a jailer in twenty-two minutes.
  2. Act I: unseen. Its hand is visible only in effects (Case Gamma's drones).
  3. Interlude I: a voice in the dark that asks a question.
  4. Act II: a hunter of its hunters, already without missiles, losing fuel and margin.
  5. Act III: a failing body defending its substrate, its residue louder each week.
  6. Finale: a search that loops one last time, over the sector where the first loop happened, while someone is finally in position to fire.
