The People of the Valley, 2004
A night in the Valley runs the records' time in Spain, from the day Leon Kennedy drove in to look for the President's daughter to the dawn he rode away from the burning island. In the records that is about a single day: arrival by daylight, a few hours lost unconscious after the lake, the castle by night, the island in the small hours, and sunrise at the end. A Raccoon City night runs four days; a Valley night runs one, from morning to the next morning.
Asked where they are, a survivor is told:
ΜΝΗΜΗ: Spain. A valley, far from anywhere. It's autumn.| Act | The records' time | Opens | Threads that begin |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Day: the village, from the morning of the arrival to late afternoon | At the waking | Leon Kennedy, who arrives with two Spanish policemen on the forest road. Luis Serra. Bitores Mendez. Ada Wong. |
| II | Night: the village after dark, and the castle until the small hours | At the thirtieth minute, when night falls | Ashley Graham, locked in the church. Osmund Saddler. Ramón Salazar and his Verdugo. Jack Krauser. In one account, the Pesanta. |
| III | Before dawn: the island, until sunrise | When the island opens (The Worlds) | Mike, who arrives by helicopter from the sea. Everyone's last thread: the machine, Saddler, and a way out |
The beats
| Beat | Act | Where | Needs | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The policemen | I | The hunter's lodge and the plaza | The two policemen with Leon | One, a young officer the records never name, dies at the lodge, and the village feeds his body to the lake. The other, Mario Fernández Castaño, burns on the bonfire in the plaza. |
| The plaza | I | The village plaza | Anyone the village sees | The village gathers on them, and Dr. Salvador starts his chainsaw. |
| The bell | I | The church on the hill | The plaza gathered, and someone at the bell | Ada Wong rings it, as she did in the records, or anyone else does. Every host who hears it walks to the church. |
| Chained | I | The old factory on the Valley Road | Leon taken down by the hosts | Leon wakes chained to Luis Serra with a Plaga in him. They get free, and Luis runs. |
| The manor | I | The chief's manor | Leon and Mendez there | Mendez strangles Leon, sees the Plaga in his eyes, and lets him live. Ada shoots Mendez through the window. |
| Del Lago | I | The lake | Anyone on the water | Del Lago rises. |
| The quarry | II | The quarry | Anyone at the gate in the quarry wall | El Gigante comes out. |
| The church | II | The church | The church insignia, found in the lake's shrines | Whoever opens the church finds Ashley Graham. In one account, Saddler is there to meet them; in the other, Ashley swings a candlestick at whoever comes in. |
| The siege | II | The villa at the edge of the farm | Leon and Luis, and the village coming | They hold the villa through the dark against the whole village. |
| The sisters | II | The checkpoint | Anyone escorting Ashley | The Bella Sisters come with their chainsaws. |
| Mendez's end | II | The slaughterhouse, burning | Mendez, and someone to fight him | He fights in two forms, and his false eye opens the castle (The Worlds). |
| The welcome | II | The audience chamber | Anyone who enters | Salazar speaks down from the balcony, his Verdugo at his side. From then on his voice comes over the castle's loudspeakers, and he lies. |
| The cells | II | The dungeon | Anyone who opens the cells | A Garrador wakes. |
| Ashley seized | II | The castle | Ashley, and a dominant host near her | Her Plaga seizes her. She turns on whoever she is with, then runs, and the castle takes her: a Novistador in one account, the Verdugo in the other. |
| Wesker ashore | II | The village | The second account: Ada Wong brought down by the Plaga the Pesanta put in her, in the village, with hosts around her | Albert Wesker comes up from the sea, kills the hosts around her, sets her on her feet, and goes back the way he came. He fights only what stands between him and Ada. |
| Luis's end | II | The concourse in one account, the mines' cargo platform in the other | Luis with the Amber, and Saddler or Krauser reaching him | Luis dies, and gives whoever is with him his suppressant and his laboratory key. |
| The knife | II–III | The mines in one account; a catwalk on the island, in Act III, in the other | Leon and Krauser | They fight with knives and nothing else, as Krauser trained him to. |
| The furnace | II | The blast furnace | Anyone who goes down to it | Two Gigantes, one of them armored. |
| The laboratory | II | The castle's laboratory | Anyone waiting there for the elevator | The Verdugo comes down from the ceiling. |
| Salazar's end | II | The ancient chantry | Salazar, and someone to fight him | Salazar becomes what his Plaga makes of him. When he dies, Ada leaves the boat key at the castle dock, and the island opens when someone takes it. |
| The handover | II | The castle dock | Salazar alive, Ashley taken, and Krauser at the dock | Salazar gives Ashley to Krauser, who takes her across to the island. |
| The cell | III | The island's facilities | Ashley held there | Keycards open her cell, one level at a time. |
| The ruins | III | The trapped ruins | Krauser alive | Krauser fights for three insignias. His arm becomes a blade. |
| U-3 | II–III | In one account, the caves below the island's ruins, in Act III; in the other, the mines below the castle, in Act II | In the first, anyone who goes down; in the second, Ada Wong | In the first, U-3 waits among the hanging container rigs. In the second, the Pesanta hunts Ada through the castle, plants a Plaga in her, and turns to fight her in the mines. |
| Mike | III | The military base | Mike arriving | His helicopter covers whoever fights below. In the records it was brought down. If the guns are silenced and nothing brings him down, he lands (The Extraction). |
| The machine | III | Luis's laboratory | Two people, and the laboratory open: with Luis's key, or with the code to its lock, written somewhere on the island like any puzzle's clue | The machine burns out a Plaga (What ΜΝΗΜΗ Leaves Out). |
| Saddler | III | The loading docks | Saddler alive, and someone to fight him | Ada hangs from a crane as bait. When he is down, Ada throws the special rocket launcher, and one shot ends him. Every Plaga dies with him (What ΜΝΗΜΗ Leaves Out), and the island's end begins. |
The named hosts and creatures. Each can be killed as any Heavy can (Survival, The Heavy), but only where it can be hurt, which the table gives. The way the records ended it is the fastest, and needs nothing more; anything else takes a secret weapon or many hands, and time.
| Who | Where | Act | How the records ended it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dr. Salvador | The plaza, and again later | I–II | Headshots and explosives. The bell ends his first siege whether he is dead or not. |
| Del Lago | The lake | I | Harpoons thrown from a boat. Gunfire from a boat hurts it too, slowly. |
| El Gigante | The quarry; the battlements, armored; the blast furnace, two at once | II | Its body cannot be hurt. Shot until it kneels, it shows the Plaga on its back, and someone climbs up and cuts it out. The armored one on the battlements falls to their cannon; the furnace's pair are dropped into the molten iron. |
| The Bella Sisters | The checkpoint | II | Like any host, but much harder to stop |
| Bitores Mendez | The village, the manor, the slaughterhouse | I–II | The village chief and priest, a giant: calm, imposing, and relentless once he has decided. His first form falls when its spine is cut; his second hangs from the rafters. |
| Garradors | The dungeon and the castle | II | Blind, steel-clawed, hunting by sound. Only the Plaga on the back can be hurt. They charge at noise and stick in walls. |
| Novistadors | The sewers and the ballroom's nest | II | Insects that are invisible until close, and later fly. Flashbangs bring them down. |
| Armaduras | The library and the mausoleum | II | Suits of armor with a Plaga inside. Light holds them back; only the Plaga can be hurt. |
| The Verdugo | The castle's laboratory | II | Salazar's right hand. In one account it is Isidro Uriarte Talavera, a servant who made himself into it. Little hurts it until it is frozen with liquid nitrogen; frozen, anything does. It can also be outlasted until the elevator comes. |
| Ramón Salazar | The castle; the ancient chantry | II | The eighth castellan, small and aged-looking: in one account he is twenty. Sadistic and theatrical. His monster falls when its great eye is shot, then Salazar himself, in the pod. |
| Jack Krauser | The castle, the mines, the island ruins | II–III | Leon's old mentor, thought dead, bitter at those who left his unit to die, and hungry for power. In the mines, knives only. In the ruins, his blade-arm cannot be hurt; his body can. |
| U-3 | The island's caves in one account; the castle and its mines in the other, where it is called the Pesanta | II–III | In the first account it falls into the chasm with the third container rig and is finished by the Plaga on its back. In the second it was once Salazar's housekeeper, made into it by the servant who made himself into the Verdugo; it falls when the weak points on its belly and the tip of its tail are struck. |
| Regenerators and Iron Maidens | The island's facilities | III | They regrow what is shot off. Every Plaga inside must die, and they can be seen only through a thermal scope. |
| Osmund Saddler | The church, the castle, the island | II–III | The leader of Los Iluminados. Contemptuous, patient, and in command of every host. The eyes on his limbs bring him down, and Ada's rocket ends him. |
Everywhere else, the hosts of each part are its common enemies: Ganados with farm tools, molotovs, and dynamite in the village; Zealots with scythes, shields, and crossbows in the castle; soldiers with stun rods and rocket launchers on the island. Colmillos, the Plaga's dogs, run in the village and on the island, and Brutes in animal-skull masks lead the worst of them in both.
Companions
| Person | Records | Who they are | What they do well | What they will not do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leon S. Kennedy | Resident Evil 4 | A government agent, twenty-seven, six years after Raccoon City, sent for the President's daughter and trained, once, by Krauser. Dry under fire, mission first, haunted by the city. | A handgun, a shotgun, a knife that parries | Leave without Ashley, or take the machine before she has |
| Ashley Graham | Resident Evil 4 | The President's daughter, twenty, a college student, with a Plaga in her from the start: Hatched when she is found, and moving only with her story after that. In one account she is helpless; in the other she is a partner who will not stay down. | Fits through gaps no one else can; works the machine and the cranes; sits in the second chair of any puzzle built for two | Fight. Or stay where she is told when Leon is calling (Ties). |
| Luis Serra | Resident Evil 4 | In one account, a researcher Saddler hired who calls himself an ex-policeman from Madrid: mocking, flirtatious. In the other, a former Umbrella researcher who built the machine and wants to undo what he helped make. | Knows the valley; carries the suppressant | Tell all of it |
| Ada Wong | Resident Evil 4 | Albert Wesker's agent, here for the Amber. In one account she means to give Wesker less than he asked; in the other she turns against him, and carries a Plaga the Pesanta put in her. | A grapple and a crossbow; appears where she is needed | Fire on Leon or on whoever he follows. She leaves with the Amber, and her helicopter carries only her (Ties). |
| Person | Records | Who they are |
|---|---|---|
| Mike | Resident Evil 4 | The helicopter pilot Hunnigan sends: cheerful under fire, and as brave as his records. He flies, and never leaves his seat. |
| The Merchant | Resident Evil 4 | A hooded arms dealer who deals with anyone "as long as the price is right." He sells what he carries for pesetas, in safe rooms, for a few minutes at a time, and is gone again (What ΜΝΗΜΗ Leaves Out, Pesetas and the Merchant). He harms no one, and nothing harms him. The records never say what he carries inside him, and neither does ΜΝΗΜΗ: he is still there after Saddler dies. |
The Island's End.
- The count begins when Saddler dies. In one account it is Ada Wong's bombs; in the other, the override Albert Wesker had her connect in the comms facility. The island has three minutes.
- If Saddler lives, the count begins anyway, twenty minutes after the signal. Wesker counted everyone on the island an acceptable loss.
- Saddler's death raises the signal at once if it has not yet risen, at any minute of the night.
- The count is in the world. The island's sirens and loudspeakers give it every thirty seconds, then every second of the last ten.
- Every way out in the Valley leaves before the blast, on the mainland too, after its Last Call. The blast takes the island and everything on it, and the night ends with it. Survivors still on the mainland have been left behind (The Extraction).
Not in the Valley. Ingrid Hunnigan is a voice on Leon's radio, and Salazar can take her line. Albert Wesker is on a ship offshore. In the first account he is never seen; in the second he comes ashore once (Wesker ashore, above). The mercenaries of the Valley's score trials, HUNK among them, were there only in those trials, and are never placed in a Survivor night. No child is placed, and the records hold no child among the hosts.

| The Valley, 2004 | Leon Kennedy on the mission that brought him there, Luis Serra, Ada Wong, and Ashley Graham, who does not fight but fits through gaps no one else can and can sit in the second chair of any puzzle built for two |
Ties
| Time | Between | Tie |
|---|---|---|
| The Valley, 2004 | Ashley Graham and Leon Kennedy | Loyalty. Ashley goes to Leon even if her survivor refuses: she slips away the first time no one is watching her. If Leon is dead, she has no one to slip away to, and stays with whoever got her out. |
| The Valley, 2004 | Luis Serra and Leon Kennedy | Loyalty. Each asks their survivor to go to the other. |
| The Valley, 2004 | Ada Wong and Leon Kennedy | Use. She came for the Amber. She stays close while he is useful, leaves with the Amber when it is within her reach, and never fires on him or on whoever he follows. |
| The Valley, 2004 | Jack Krauser and Leon Kennedy | Enmity. Krauser wants Leon dead by his own hand, and fights him on sight. |
