Appearance
The People of Raccoon City, 1998
A night in the Raccoon City of 1998 runs the city's last four days, from the morning Jill Valentine escaped her apartment to the dawn the missile fell: 28 September to sunrise on 1 October, about an hour of the city's time to each minute of the night (The Worlds, The Four Days).
Asked where they are, a survivor is told:
ΜΝΗΜΗ: Raccoon City. It's the twenty-eighth of September.| Act | Day | Opens | Threads that begin |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 28 September | At the waking, 06:00 | Jill Valentine, from her apartment in Uptown. The U.B.C.S.: Carlos Oliveira, Mikhail Viktor, Nikolai Zinoviev, Tyrell Patrick, Murphy Seeker. The Nemesis. |
| II | 29 September | At 06:00 on the 29th | Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, who arrive at 22:00 in a police cruiser down the Arklay road and crash in Downtown. Ada Wong, HUNK, and the T-00, the same night. |
| III | 30 September, to 06:40 on 1 October | At 06:00 on the 30th | Jill Valentine lies unconscious through the day, as the records left her, unless a dose has woken her |
| The Last Morning | 1 October, from 06:40 to sunrise | At the signal, which here is the missile (The Last Morning, below) | Everyone's last thread: a way out before the strike |
Everyone else is in the city from the waking, where the records had them. ΜΝΗΜΗ names each day as it opens.
The beats
| Beat | Act | Where | Needs | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Nemesis released | I | A freight container in the Uptown rail yard | ΜΝΗΜΗ has placed it | The container opens, and the hunt for Jill Valentine begins. |
| Brad at the gate | I | The R.P.D. front gate | Brad Vickers there, with the dead or the Nemesis near | In one account the Nemesis kills him. In the other a zombie bites him while he helps Jill, and he tells her to go on. |
| Bard's end | II | Raccoon General Hospital | Nathaniel Bard there, and Nikolai Zinoviev reaching him | Nikolai kills him (Ties), and what Bard made is lost with him unless someone has already taken it. If Nikolai never reaches him, Bard stays at his work until the hospital falls. |
| Murphy at the sales office | I | The Umbrella sales office in Uptown | Murphy Seeker, with Nikolai or Carlos | Nikolai shoots him and calls it protocol, or Carlos ends it because Murphy asks. |
| The U.B.C.S. regroups | I | The Uptown station | Two of the U.B.C.S. alive | Mikhail takes command (Ties). |
| Mikhail's last stand | I | A Kite Bros Railway tram, from the Uptown station to Raccoon Park | Mikhail, Jill, and the Nemesis aboard | Mikhail blows the Nemesis off the tram with his explosives and dies. The tram crashes at the St. Michael Clock Tower. |
| The crash | II | Downtown | Leon and Claire arriving | Their cruiser crashes into a tanker, and the fire separates them. Each makes for the R.P.D. (Ties). |
| The hall falls | II | The R.P.D. main hall | Marvin Branagh holding it, and the dead reaching it | Marvin is bitten. He holds the hall until he turns. |
| The shutter | II | Inside the R.P.D. | Elliot Edward, and no one raising the shutter in time | The dead take him, and his notebook with him. |
| Kendo's shop falls | II | Kendo's gun shop, Downtown | Robert Kendo inside | The dead come through the window. He goes with whoever gets him out, or dies behind his counter. |
| The Tyrant released | II | The overturned Umbrella transport truck, Downtown | ΜΝΗΜΗ has placed it | The T-00 walks to the R.P.D. |
| Ben in the cells | II | The R.P.D. cells | Ben Bertolucci, and William Birkin or the T-00 reaching him | In one account, an embryo Birkin planted bursts from him. In the other, the T-00 kills him. |
| Irons's end | II | The R.P.D. and the sewers | Brian Irons, and William Birkin reaching him | Birkin plants an embryo in him, and it bursts from him. |
| Ada and Annette | II | The sewers | Ada Wong and Annette Birkin | Annette fires on Ada (Ties). |
| The Clock Tower | II | The St. Michael Clock Tower | Jill and the Nemesis there | The Nemesis infects Jill, and she falls unconscious. If Carlos is near, he carries her to the chapel. If not, she lies where she fell. |
| A dose for Jill | II to the Last Morning | Wherever Jill lies | Jill infected and alive | If Carlos lives, he asks everyone he meets for a cure. A survivor who gives Jill a dose wakes her, and she goes her own way to a way out, with Carlos if he is with her. |
| The railgun | III | The disposal factory, Industrial Edge | The Nemesis there, and someone at the railgun | Fired, it ends the Nemesis. |
| The furnace | III | NEST | The T-00 there | It falls into the molten metal and does not come back. |
| The last car | Last Morning | NEST, the Emergency Train | William Birkin alive when the train leaves | He comes for the train. Its self-destruct ends him, and whoever cannot keep him off the carriage until then goes with him. |
| The flare | Last Morning | The R.P.D. roof | HUNK alive | He lights the flare. The Rooftop is his pickup, and he takes one of its two seats, boarding last as the people of the records do (The Extraction, The Boarding). |
| Nikolai's bargain | Last Morning | Wherever he is | Nikolai alive | He makes for a helicopter, a way out's or an improvised one. In one account he takes it, and flies it out with the cargo he came for. In the other he is left on a rooftop with the missile coming. |
Named creatures. Three creatures of the records walk the city on threads of their own. Their beats release them, not a region's Crisis (The Dead and the Engineered). Each can be killed, and each takes longer to kill than any other Heavy. Put down, it rises a few minutes later in its next form, worse each time, as the records show, and only put down in its last form is it dead for the night (Survival, The Heavy). The end the records gave it ends it at once, in any form. A beat that needs a creature already dead does not happen (Story Nights and the People of the Records, Story Nights).
| Creature | From | What it does | Its end |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Nemesis-T Type | A freight container in the Uptown rail yard, in Act I | Hunts the S.T.A.R.S.: Jill Valentine wherever she is, and Brad Vickers until he falls. It kills whatever stands between it and them, and nothing else on purpose. It carries a rocket launcher. ΜΝΗΜΗ places it in every night. No survivor can become one (The Turned, What They Become). | The railgun, in Act III |
| The T-00 | The Umbrella transport truck in Downtown, in Act II | Walks the R.P.D. District, hunting by sound and coming for whoever carries a pure G-Virus strain | The furnace in NEST, in Act III |
| William Birkin | The sewers and NEST, from the waking | What the G-Virus made of him. He looks for hosts, and his grip plants an embryo as a Brood Host's does. He kills whoever stands between him and the G-Virus, and rises each time in a further form. | The Emergency Train's self-destruct, in the Last Morning |
The Last Morning. In the Raccoon City of 1998, the signal is the missile. ΜΝΗΜΗ raises it as always, by her verdict or at the ninetieth minute (The Extraction). It rises at 06:40 on 1 October, by the city's clock, and opens the Last Morning: the sky's pace is set to bring it there (The Worlds, The Four Days).
She raises it over every device in the city at once, as a person who has just heard it on the Army's band would say it:
ΜΝΗΜΗ: Everyone, listen to me. There's a missile coming. The government's going to wipe out the city.
Twenty minutes. Three ways out. Follow the white light.
There are two doses of medicine left in the whole city.- The count. The strike comes twenty minutes after the alert, or ten seconds after the last living survivor has gone, whichever is sooner (The Extraction, The End of the Night). There is no clock on the screen, as there is none anywhere in a Survivor night. The count is in the world: ΜΝΗΜΗ gives the time left through every radio, siren, and loudspeaker, in a person's words (Fifteen minutes. … Ten. … Five. Get to the light.), at fifteen, ten, and five minutes, then every minute, then counts down the last ten seconds aloud. At ten minutes the Last Dose of Elpis opens, and she says so (Elpis in the Night, The Reserve). The twenty minutes are the city's own: from 06:40 its sky runs at the survivor's pace, from first grey to the sun at 07:00, and the strike comes with the sun.
- The ways out. Every way out leaves no later than one minute before impact, full or not, after its Last Call. A way out that has not left by then never will.
- No second chance. The rule that the night goes on when every way out leaves empty (The Extraction) does not hold here. The strike ends the night. The one exception is a way out brought down in its Climb: if it was the last, ΜΝΗΜΗ opens one more, but only if it can still leave before impact (The Extraction, The Climb).
- At impact. Everything still in the city falls with it: survivors, Echoes, companions, the Stranded, the Turned, and the dead. A survivor in the city at impact has fallen, and the After-Action Report says how. The Turned go with the city: their race ended when they turned (The Turned, No Victory for the Turned).
Companions
| Person | Records | Who they are | What they do well | What they will not do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leon S. Kennedy | Resident Evil 2 | A rookie R.P.D. officer, twenty-one, on his first day. Idealistic, protective, too ready to trust. | A steady handgun and a shotgun; puts himself between the dead and whoever is hurt. On some nights he carries the Lightning Hawk, a secret weapon that is his alone (Survivor, Companions) | Doubt Ada Wong, whatever she tells him |
| Claire Redfield | Resident Evil 2 | A college student, nineteen, who came to the city looking for her brother. Reckless, and fierce in defense of anyone weaker. | A handgun and a grenade launcher. On some nights it is the GM 79, a secret weapon that is hers alone (Survivor, Companions) | Leave anyone weaker behind. She asks everyone she meets about Chris. |
| Ada Wong | Resident Evil 2 | A spy who came for the G-Virus. In one account she says she is looking for her boyfriend, in the other that she is with the FBI. Secretive and manipulative, and fond of Leon despite herself. | A handgun; goes through vents and gaps no one else fits | Tell the truth about who she is. She leaves for the G-Virus (Ties). |
| HUNK | Resident Evil 2 | The last of Umbrella's U.S.S. Alpha Team, "Mr. Death." Silent and cold; the mission comes before everything. | The best-armed person in the city: rifle, shotgun, grenades | Follow anyone for long. He walks with a survivor only on his way to his own extraction, and leaves for it when the signal rises (Ties). |
| Robert Kendo | Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 | The owner of Kendo's gun shop, who built the S.T.A.R.S. their handguns. Wary of strangers and generous with guns. | A shotgun; knows every weapon in the shop | Leave his shop while it still holds. In Act II it may not. |
| Jill Valentine | Resident Evil 3 | A former S.T.A.R.S. officer, twenty-three, who stayed in the city to expose Umbrella. Self-reliant; trusts what she sees, never a badge. | Picks locks, disarms traps, handles explosives; a handgun and a rifle. On some nights she carries the MGL, a secret weapon that is hers alone (Survivor, Companions) | Trust Nikolai Zinoviev (Ties). Whoever walks with her walks with what hunts her. |
| Carlos Oliveira | Resident Evil 3 | A U.B.C.S. corporal, twenty-one. Warm, flirtatious, decent, and shaken to learn what Umbrella is. | An assault rifle and heavy weapons | Abandon someone he has chosen to protect, or shoot anyone for a Mark unless they ask him to, as Murphy Seeker once did |
| Mikhail Viktor | Resident Evil 3 | The leader of U.B.C.S. Delta Platoon, forty-five, a former Red Army officer. He puts his men first. | A rifle and explosives; commands (Ties) | Run. He is badly wounded from the first minute. He does not know what Nikolai is. |
| Nikolai Zinoviev | Resident Evil 3 | A U.B.C.S. sergeant, thirty-five, secretly an Umbrella Supervisor paid for combat data. Greedy, cold, a liar: "There's a price tag for everything." | A silenced pistol and explosives; flies a helicopter (The Extraction, Improvised Ways Out) | Keep faith with anyone (Ties). A dose handed to him to carry, he destroys, as he destroyed the city's vaccine. |
| Tyrell Patrick | Resident Evil 3 | A U.B.C.S. mercenary, thirty-two, once of the Foreign Legion. Money-minded, and Carlos's partner. | Works the radio; guards the wounded | Leave Carlos. Whether he suspects Nikolai depends on the account (Ties). |
Named Stranded
The named Stranded are more than any night holds. ΜΝΗΜΗ chooses at Assembly which of them are placed tonight (Story Nights and the People of the Records, Story Nights), within the night's count of the Stranded, and a file never finds the same ones two nights in a row.
| Person | Records | Where, and who they are | What they will not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brad Vickers | Resident Evil 3 | The S.T.A.R.S. pilot, hiding near the R.P.D. in Act I, terrified, because something is hunting the S.T.A.R.S. | Stay. Freed, he runs, unless there is a helicopter ready to fly: he flies it (The Extraction, Improvised Ways Out). |
| Marvin Branagh | Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 | The R.P.D. lieutenant holding the station's main hall. Steady and loyal to his men: "Uniform or not, you do not hesitate." He gives what he has: his knife, a radio, the way through the station. | Leave the R.P.D. Bitten when the hall falls, he turns when Act III opens unless someone gives him a dose first. |
| Robert Kendo, before his shop falls | Resident Evil 3 | Behind his own counter, with the shop still holding. He sells nothing, gives a gun to someone he trusts, and aims at everyone first. | Come along |
| Ben Bertolucci | Resident Evil 2 | A freelance reporter in the R.P.D. cells who has been digging into Chief Irons's bribes. In one account he locked himself in and will not come out. In the other, Irons locked him in, and he trades what he knows about Irons and Umbrella for the key. | Come along |
| Brian Irons | Resident Evil 2 | The chief of the R.P.D., paid by Umbrella, in his office. Corrupt, cruel, and coming apart. He knows the station's hidden ways. | Keep faith (Ties) |
| Elliot Edward | Resident Evil 2 | An R.P.D. officer trapped behind a shutter in the station, with the dead at his back and the escape plan in his notebook | Survive being left |
| Annette Birkin | Resident Evil 2 | An Umbrella virologist in the sewers beneath the station, William Birkin's wife. Paranoid: she believes everyone has come for the G-Virus, and knows the way into NEST. | Come along, or let Ada Wong live (Ties) |
| Murphy Seeker | Resident Evil 3 | A wounded U.B.C.S. sniper in the Uptown Umbrella sales office, Carlos's friend, who insists he is not infected | Admit he is |
| Dario Rosso | Resident Evil 3 | A salesman from out of town, sealed in a cargo container in an Uptown warehouse. Panicked and selfish. He talks only through the door. | Come out, for anyone |
| Nathaniel Bard | Resident Evil 3 (2020) | An Umbrella researcher hiding in the laboratory beneath Raccoon General Hospital, who has been making a vaccine that Umbrella wants destroyed. In ΜΝΗΜΗ's world nothing he made cures: what he carries are the laboratory's antiviral injections, which hold the virus and never end it (The Infection). In the records he was found shot before Carlos Oliveira reached him (Bard's end, above). | Leave his work |
| Rita | Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 | An R.P.D. officer holding the station with Marvin Branagh. She knows a passage out of the station that no one else uses, and goes through it for help when Marvin tells her to. | Disobey Marvin (Ties) |
| Peter Jenkins | Resident Evil Outbreak | A researcher at Raccoon University, George Hamilton's friend, finishing a vaccine in the research wing. As with Bard, nothing he made cures in ΜΝΗΜΗ's world, and he does not know it. | Leave the vaccine |
| Greg Mueller | Resident Evil Outbreak | A former Umbrella researcher at Raccoon University, who wants Peter's vaccine never finished. Polite, and lying. | Keep faith with Peter (Ties) |
| Monica | Resident Evil Outbreak | An Umbrella researcher deep in NEST, stealing its research to sell. Cold, and ready to leave anyone behind. In the records William Birkin killed her there. | Come along, or give up the research |
| Linda | Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 | An Umbrella researcher, wounded and alone in the sewers, after a Tyrant threw her from a ledge in the laboratory above. She knows the way from NEST to the streets. | Nothing the records forbid. She comes along gladly. |
| The six held for the Masterminds | Resident Evil Resistance | In cells on the hidden floors beneath Raccoon General Hospital, where the Masterminds kept the subjects of their trials (ΜΝΗΜΗ): Samuel Jordan, a boxer; Valerie Harmon, a chemistry student; Tyrone Henry, a firefighter; January Van Sant, a hacker; Becca Woolett, a park ranger; Martin Sandwich, a mechanic. Taken along, each does one thing from who they were: Samuel fights with his hands, Valerie treats wounds, Tyrone forces doors, January opens any lock that runs on power, Becca shoots straight, and Martin gets machines running. | Nothing the records forbid. They come along gladly. |
| The eight of Outbreak | Resident Evil Outbreak | Kevin Ryman in the R.P.D. District, Mark Wilkins at the Apple Inn, Jim Chapman in a Kite Bros Railway subway station, George Hamilton at Raccoon General Hospital, David King in the sewers, Alyssa Ashcroft at the Raccoon Press office, Yoko Suzuki at Raccoon University, Cindy Lennox behind the bar at J's Bar. Taken along, each does what they do in Outbreak (Outbreak, The Eight). Bitten, Jim's clock runs fastest and Yoko's slowest. Jim can drive the Freight Engine, and David can fit any part in half the time (The Extraction, Improvised Ways Out). | Nothing the records forbid. They come along gladly. |
The named dead. Whoever a beat kills, if the records say they rose, walks among the dead in their own clothes from then on: Brad Vickers in the R.P.D. District, Marvin Branagh in the main hall, Robert Kendo in his shop. A person whose beat never happens never walks.
Some of the named dead were dead before the night began. Will, who worked the bar at J's Bar and was the first in it to be bitten, walks outside it from the waking.
Neither companion nor Stranded
| Person | Records | Who they are |
|---|---|---|
| Barry Burton | Resident Evil 3 (1999) | The S.T.A.R.S. weapons specialist, who came back for Jill Valentine at the end. He is placed only on nights ΜΝΗΜΗ chooses his first account, and only when the Factory Helicopter is one of the ways out she opened. He arrives by helicopter when Act III opens and lands beside the disposal factory: his helicopter takes the Factory Helicopter's place and its four seats. He flies, never leaves his seat, and asks everyone who boards whether Jill lives. If she is within sight when his Last Call comes, he calls her by name. |
Not in the city. Chris Redfield is in Europe, and so is Barry Burton, except on the nights above. Sherry Birkin and every other child of the records are never placed: Emma Kendo, Lucia Rosso, and Lucy, the girl lost in the woods. Some people of the records are never placed in a Survivor night at all:
- Outside the city. Albert Lester, his wife Dorothy, and Regan were in the woods and the abandoned hospital in the hills, beyond the Army's barricades. They stay in Flashback, one of the eight's records.
- Ended by what the night does not hold. Dr. Carter, whose record ends with the Tyrant he woke in the laboratory, stays in End of the Road, one of the eight's records.
- Already dead, and never risen. Katherine Warren, the mayor's daughter, died at Brian Irons's hands before the night began. She lies where he left her.
- Watchers. The Masterminds watched their trials through cameras and never walked the city. ΜΝΗΜΗ took their place (ΜΝΗΜΗ). Annette Birkin and Nikolai Zinoviev, who sat behind those cameras too, are placed as the city's records hold them.
- Nights that never happened. Some records tell nights that never were: the one in which Umbrella's Wolfpack and the U.S. team called Echo Six fought through the city and Leon Kennedy could die in it, and the one in which four people the city killed, among them a U.S.S. soldier called Ghost and an officer named Daniel Cortini, lived. ΜΝΗΜΗ checks her nights against what happened, and these did not. No one from them is placed in a Survivor night.
Companion Roster
| Map | Roster |
|---|---|
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield on their first night in the city, Ada Wong, HUNK, Robert Kendo, Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira, Mikhail Viktor, Nikolai Zinoviev, Tyrell Patrick. Each is found on their thread, from the act it begins in (The People of Raccoon City, 1998, above). |
Ties
| Time | Between | Tie |
|---|---|---|
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield | Loyalty. Separated on their first night. Each asks their survivor to go to the other. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Carlos Oliveira and Jill Valentine | Loyalty. Each asks their survivor to go to the other, and if Carlos's survivor falls, he goes to Jill. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Carlos Oliveira and Tyrell Patrick | Loyalty. Partners. Each asks their survivor to go to the other. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Carlos Oliveira and Murphy Seeker | Loyalty. Carlos goes to his friend. If Murphy asks him to end it, Carlos does, and is never the same that night. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Mikhail Viktor and the U.B.C.S. | Command. Mikhail calls his men on the U.B.C.S. channel. Wherever two of them meet, he leads every survivor near them toward the nearest way out made ready, and puts himself between them and the dead. He is wounded, as the records say, and cannot run. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Nikolai Zinoviev and everyone | Betrayal. A U.B.C.S. sergeant who is secretly Umbrella's Supervisor, paid for combat data. He turns when a laboratory or a pure strain is within his reach, or when someone beside him goes down or shows a Mark with lines. He kills the marked and the fallen and calls it protocol. His tell: he asks where the laboratories are. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Nikolai Zinoviev and Mikhail Viktor | Command, deceived. Mikhail does not know what Nikolai is. When Nikolai kills someone who carried a Mark with lines, Mikhail believes him and stands with him: he orders every marked survivor away from the group at gunpoint, and fires if they come on. When Nikolai kills someone clean, or Carlos or Tyrell saw what happened, Mikhail turns on him. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira, and Nikolai Zinoviev | Distrust. Both distrust him from the start. When Nikolai betrays, they fight him. Carlos never fires on the survivor who freed him, or on anyone because of a Mark unless they ask: he refuses Mikhail's order. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Tyrell Patrick and Nikolai Zinoviev | Two accounts. In the first, Tyrell distrusts him and says why to anyone in earshot, and fights him when he betrays. In the second, he never suspects him. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Ben Bertolucci and Brian Irons | Enmity. Ben has the story on Irons, and Irons knows it. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Brian Irons and everyone | Betrayal. He asks to come along, and turns on whoever he is alone with, the first time they are. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Annette Birkin and Ada Wong | Enmity. Annette knows what Ada came for and fires on her on sight. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | HUNK and everyone | Use. He walks with a survivor while it takes him toward his extraction, and leaves for it when the signal rises. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Ada Wong and Leon Kennedy | Use. Ada came for the G-Virus. When a pure G-Virus strain is within her reach, she takes it and leaves. She never fires on Leon or on whoever he follows. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Nikolai Zinoviev and Nathaniel Bard | Enmity. Nikolai means no vaccine to leave the city, and kills Bard on sight. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Marvin Branagh and Rita | Command. Marvin gives the orders in the station, and Rita obeys them. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | George Hamilton and Peter Jenkins | Loyalty. Old friends. Each asks their survivor to go to the other. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Greg Mueller and Peter Jenkins | Betrayal. Greg means the vaccine never to be finished. He kills Peter the first time they are alone together in the research wing. His tell: he asks Peter how close the work is. |
| Raccoon City, 1998 | Nikolai Zinoviev and Greg Mueller | Enmity. Nikolai has been paid to silence Greg, and kills him on sight. |
